This fall marked 50 years of auctioneering for Chilton’s Jerry Thiel.
Thiel & Thiel Auctions of Chilton has an amazing history, dating back to 1919; however, Jerry has been doing it full time for 50 years as of Oct. 1. Thiel & Thiel Auctions is one of the most respected and oldest auction companies in the state.
Jerry has seen many different facets of the auction industry and has many stories to share. His proudest accomplishment is now having the fifth generation of his family take part in the auction business.
Thiel’s auction work began with his grandfather, Colonel Andy, and his father, R. A., but he now shares the everyday workings with his son Ken, daughter Tamara and grandson Mick. There are numerous other family members who also contribute to the business. It truly is a family work environment—even those not related are treated like family.
Work ethic, community involvement and teamwork have all played an important role in the success of the business. Jerry recounts many memories of working with his grandfather and father and how much the industry has changed.
There are more and more online auctions now, which is not what Jerry ever thought would happen. Adjusting to the times is something that has led to 50 years of success.
Jerry has been a member of the Wisconsin Auctioneers Association since 1973. In 2011, he was appointed to the Auctioneers Examining Board for the State of Wisconsin and now serves as chairman of the board. Jerry was also inducted into the Wisconsin State Auctioneers Association Hall of Fame in 2012.
He is a member of the National Auctioneers Association, Wisconsin Realtors Association and National Realtors Association, having served as past state director for the WAA and WRA. Jerry is the owner/broker of Thiel Real Estate, Thiel & Thiel Auctions and Thiel Appraisal LLC in Chilton.
