LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WKRC/WLKY/CNN Newsource) – A massive country ham went for a whopping $10 million at the recent Kentucky State Fair auction.
Former U.N. ambassador Kelly Craft and her husband, Joe Craft, along with Central Bank, put up the money for the prized ham during the 50th Annual Country Ham breakfast.
The Grand Champion ham was produced in Lyon County and weighed in at an impressive 18 pounds. As usual, all of the proceeds will go to charity.
“This money will go to build 57 new homes for families in Knott County in a new community called ‘Chestnut Ridge’ for families that lost everything in the Eastern Kentucky floods,” said Craft family representative Kristen Branscum.
However, Branscum says every corner of Kentucky will benefit from the money. Other recipients will include the Boys and Girls Club and the Kentucky Derby Museum.
More than 1,600 people attended the ham breakfast Thursday morning, including Ky. Gov. Andy Beshear, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, and Commissioner of Agriculture Ryan Quarles.
“A lot of state fairs are known for particular things,” Quarles said. “Iowa is known for a butter cow. Kentucky is known for a $10 million country ham.”
