Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association Holds 75th Annual Convention

Harrisburg, Pa. — This year marks 75 years of the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association and is celebrated January 10 through January 13 at its annual convention and trade show.

Over 200 auction professionals were in attendance. Eighteen presenters from across the country provided information.

Some of the presenters were from the PAA membership itself, including past auction competition champions Matt Hostetter, J. Merrill Stoltzfus, and John Stauffer, who led “Bid Calling Workshops” where auctioneers could bid and receive some cues.

Award

Several awards are given to honor people who have dedicated their careers to the industry and who have made the industry better.

Daniel A. of Trace Auction Service in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Trace was the newest inductee into the PAA Hall of Fame. The award is given to a person based on honesty, integrity, high moral character, sharp impartiality and distinction, and is given each year to an auctioneer who, in the course of his or her profession, has distinguished himself or herself in promoting excellence. The Auctioneer of the Year title is awarded to an auctioneer who has demonstrated outstanding leadership, high ethical standards, willingness to share with others, involvement in community affairs, and outstanding contribution to the PAA and the auctioneer profession. Competition

Annually, PAA hosts the Pennsylvania Auctioneer Competition Championship at the Harrisburg Farm Show Complex during the week of the PA Farm Show.

The contest was held on January 11 and highlights the best auctioneers licensed in the state of Pennsylvania. Seventeen contestants competed, with Brian Burke II of Meshopen, Pennsylvania, emerging as the overall champion.

Runner-up was Shawn Carbaugh of Spring Grove, Pennsylvania; The rookies (licensed for less than two years) were Spencer Karn of Klezburg, Pennsylvania; And the top female competitor was Dana Balsamo of Princeton, New Jersey.

There was also a Champion of Champions auction contest. This is a contest that is held only once every five years and is attended by past PA Auctioneer Contest Champions. This time there were 10 contestants.

Coming out on top was J. Merrill Stoltzfus of Newport, Pennsylvania; The runner-up was John Stauffer of Robesonia, Pennsylvania; And in third place was Patrick Morgan of New Holland, Pennsylvania.

Awarded Companies

Several auction firms were awarded in the first place categories in the PAA advertising and marketing contest, including Patrick Morgan Auction Services, LLC; Alderfer Auctions; Hurley Auctions; Les Longenecker; L&H Auctions; HK Keller; Lane Ryan Auctioneers; Pook & Pook, Inc.; Ken Geyer Real Estate Auctioneers; and Hostetter Auctioneers.

The Best of Show, a strictly judged award, was awarded to Hostator Auctions, who also won the Auctioneer’s Choice Advertising and Marketing Award, which was judged and selected by all auctioneers participating in the convention.

Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association officers for 2023 include Lon Klemer, president of Harleysville, Pennsylvania; President-elect Thomas Saylor of Felton, Pennsylvania; Vice President Michael Calvert of Linesville, Pennsylvania; and Treasurer Robert A. of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Ensminger.

Jamie Shearer of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, will serve as immediate past president on the PAA board. Kimberly K. of Boyertown, Pennsylvania. Douglas is the association’s executive director.
