Zoom session CE Information: Creating Enforceable Contracts
The objectives of this class include identifying the general legal requirements of a valid contract, identifying the specific requirements for valid auction contracts in North Carolina, understanding the statute of frauds under the Uniform Commercial Code, identifying problem areas for auctioneers in the area of contracts, and developing solutions to these problems. This course will help attendees develop a stronger grasp of what exactly makes a contract binding by dispelling common myths about contract law. This course will also help attendees develop a list of potential questions to address with an attorney before the questions turn into expensive problems.
Matthew G. Parker is an associate at Michael Best and Friedrich, LLP, a founding member of Innovative Agricultural Technologies, LLC, manager of Terrace Ridge Farm, LLC, and a third-generation professional auctioneer with Parker Benefit Auctions.
At Michael Best, Matthew focuses on patent law, including patent prosecution and freedom-to-operate investigations. Innovative Agricultural Technologies is a North Carolina farm equipment company specializing in the mechanization of historically underserved agricultural industries, and Matthew is currently focusing on the pine straw industry. With Terrace Ridge Farm, a 95-year-old family farm in Carthage, NC, Matthew specializes in producing local pasture-raised beef and horse-quality hay. With Parker Benefit Auctions, Matthew conducts auctions and special appeals for nonprofits across both North and South Carolina.
Matthew graduated valedictorian from Sandhills Community College with an Associate in Science degree in 2015 at the age of eighteen. After transferring from Sandhills Community College, Matthew graduated first in his class from North Carolina State University in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in biological and agricultural engineering, concentrating in both environmental engineering and agricultural engineering, and with a minor in soil science. Matthew graduated valedictorian from Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law in Raleigh, NC in 2021 with the highest GPA in the history of the law school.
A third-generation auctioneer, Matthew is recognized by the National Auctioneers Association as one of approximately 170 Benefit Auction Specialists and 50 Contract Auction Specialists in the world, has taught at the National Auctioneers Association Conference & Show, and regularly competes in the International Auctioneer Championship. Matthew takes pride in continuing the auctioneering legacy of his grandfather, AB Parker, and in working side-by-side with his family in the auction industry. In his spare time, Matthew enjoys working at Terrace Ridge Farm and spending time with his fiancée, Hannah Bullen.
